TVK Emerges as Single-Largest Party in Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections

The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), founded in February 2024 by actor Vijay, emerged as the single-largest party in the Tamil Nadu assembly elections, winning 108 of the 234 seats. The ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) won 58 seats, while the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) secured 47; the rest were won by smaller parties and independents. The result marks a sharp break from the DMK-AIADMK political dominance that has defined the state for decades.
TVK's success came despite being a first-time contestant in assembly elections, signaling a significant shift in voter alignment. The party not only secured clear victories but also prevailed in tightly contested constituencies. In Tiruppattur, TVK's Senivasa Sethupathy defeated the DMK candidate by a single vote, the narrowest margin in the election.
Four other constituencies recorded margins under 300 votes: Veppanahalli (138), Kanniyakumari (214), Polur (227), and Tirukkoilur (285). These results underscore the intensity of competition and the party's ability to mobilize support in key pockets across the state. Election officials have confirmed the results, with recounts conducted in the closest races.
The Election Commission of India has declared the results final. The Tamil Nadu Governor will invite the TVK leader to form the government, with the first session of the new assembly expected next week.
