Maharashtra Makes Revised NPS Optional for State Employees

The Maharashtra government has made the revised National Pension Scheme (NPS) optional for state government employees covered under the existing NPS framework, according to a circular issued by the State Finance Department on May 6, 2026. Employees may choose to join the revised scheme under conditions outlined in the order.
The circular specifies a detailed procedure for implementation, including the process for employees to exercise their option to switch to the revised NPS. It clarifies that the revised scheme will apply only to those who formally opt in within the stipulated deadline.
The move allows existing NPS subscribers in the state government to retain their current benefits or transition to the revised structure based on individual preference. No automatic enrollment will take place for any employee.
State authorities have directed departments to disseminate the guidelines and ensure compliance with the opt-in timeline. The deadline for exercising the option will be announced separately by the Finance Department.
