Beware: New Scam Targets Second-Hand Car Buyers Online

Imagine you're in the market for a second-hand car and you come across a great deal online. You start communicating with the seller, and they seem really friendly and helpful. But then, they ask you to send them money for booking and processing charges. Sounds too good to be true? It probably is.
A Delhi Police investigation has revealed a new scam targeting people looking to buy second-hand cars online. The scam involves a fake seller posing as an associate of a verified platform to gain trust and steal money from unsuspecting buyers. The seller will share photos and details of a vehicle and convince the victim to send money for booking and processing charges. But once the money is sent, the seller disappears and doesn't deliver the car.
The police arrested a 32-year-old man, Aman Sethi, who was involved in this scam. He would pose as an employee of a reputed platform and build trust using fake information, and ask for advance payments in his personal bank account. After receiving the money, he would delay responses and eventually disappear.
The police investigation revealed that Aman had been involved in a similar cheating case registered at another police station in the city, indicating a pattern of fraud. The police have recovered two debit cards, two mobile phones, and two SIM cards used in the crime. They are now working to trace the full money trail, identify any accomplices, and recover the cheated amount.
To avoid falling victim to this scam, the police advise people to remain cautious when dealing with online sellers. They should verify the authenticity of sellers and avoid transferring money to personal bank accounts without proper checks. If you suspect a case of cyber fraud, you can report it on the helpline number 1930 or approach the nearest cyber police station.
The Delhi Police are urging people to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity to prevent further scams. They are also working to educate people on how to stay safe online and avoid falling prey to such scams. By being aware of these scams, we can all protect ourselves and our loved ones from falling victim to online fraud.
