Kunki Chowdhury Loses Guwahati Central Seat to BJP's Vijay Kumar Gupta in Assam Assembly Polls
Kunki Chowdhury, a 27-year-old first-time candidate from the Assam Jatiya Parishad, lost the Guwahati Central seat to Bharatiya Janata Party's Vijay Kumar Gupta by 61,921 votes in the 2026 Assam Assembly elections. Chowdhury secured 39,376 votes, while Gupta received 1,01,297; Aam Aadmi Party's Anurupa Dekaraja came third with 1,939 votes, according to the Election Commission of India.
Chowdhury, one of the youngest candidates in the fray, was promoted as a Gen Z representative in the Congress-led opposition alliance to appeal to younger voters. She had no prior political experience and was among only 59 women contesting in the 722-seat Assam Assembly elections. Her campaign centered on youth participation and political change, framing the contest as a generational shift against Gupta, a 70-year-old veteran.
The election drew controversy when Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma threatened legal action against Chowdhury's parents over alleged beef consumption and remarks that he claimed hurt religious sentiments. Chowdhury rejected the allegations as politically motivated and baseless. According to her election affidavit, she declared assets worth Rs 9.1 lakh, liabilities of Rs 24 lakh, and an annual income of Rs 9.6 lakh.
Her candidacy underscored growing youth engagement in Assam's political landscape, even as first-time and younger candidates face steep challenges against entrenched political figures. The result reaffirms the dominance of established parties and leaders in the current electoral environment.
The Assam Assembly will convene next month, with the newly elected members set to be sworn in following the Election Commission's official notification.
