BJP Leads in West Bengal Assembly Elections with 206 Seats, Set for Majority

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is on track for a majority in the West Bengal Assembly, leading in 206 of 294 seats as of 8 p.m. on May 4, 2026, following the state's legislative elections. The incumbent All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) has won 44 seats and leads in 37, totaling 81, marking a sharp decline from its previous dominance.
The BJP's vote share rose to 44.8%, an increase of nearly seven percentage points since 2021, surpassing the TMC's coalition total of 41.9%. The Left Front alliance has secured three seats with a 6.4% vote share, its first seat gain since 2016. The Congress has not won or led in any seat so far.
The Election Commission is expected to finalize results by May 5. The BJP will likely stake claim to form the government in West Bengal, ending the TMC's 15-year tenure, as soon as the final counts are confirmed.
