BJP Wins West Bengal Assembly Elections, Set to Form Government for First Time

The Bharatiya Janata Party won the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, ending the 15-year rule of the All India Trinamool Congress. Riding on widespread anti-incumbency sentiment, the BJP secured a majority of seats and is set to form its first state government in West Bengal.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee conceded defeat in the Bhabanipur constituency, losing to BJP candidate and former TMC leader Suvendu Adhikari by 15,105 votes. The result marks a significant political shift in the eastern state, traditionally resistant to BJP's national footprint.
The Election Commission of India is scheduled to announce the official results and schedule the swearing-in of the new government by May 7, 2026. The BJP's state leadership will finalize the Chief Ministerial candidate in a meeting on May 6.
