UDF Sweeps Ernakulam in Kerala Assembly Elections, LDF Suffers Major Setback
The United Democratic Front (UDF) secured all 14 legislative assembly seats in Ernakulam district in the 2026 Kerala Assembly elections, marking a decisive shift in voter preference and the Left Democratic Front's (LDF) worst electoral performance in the region in over 15 years. The LDF lost five constituenciesKalamassery, Kunnathunad, Kochi, Vypeen, and Kothamangalamthat it had won in 2021.
The Indian National Congress-led alliance capitalized on shifting voter sentiment, while the LDF failed to retain its urban and semi-urban strongholds despite previous gains in 2016 and 2021. The UDF's sweep reverses a trend of competitive parity in the district, where the LDF had won three seats in 2011 and five in subsequent elections.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), contesting as part of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), allocated most of its seats in Ernakulam to its partner Twenty20, a corporate-backed political group. The strategy backfired as none of the Twenty20 candidates won, and the NDA failed to secure any seats in the district.
Official vote counts were confirmed by the Election Commission of India on May 4, 2026. The Kerala Assembly will convene its next session in Thiruvananthapuram on June 10 to constitute the new government.
