BJP-Led Alliance Secures Landslide Victory in Assam Assembly Elections
The Bharatiya Janata Party-led North-East Democratic Alliance (NEDA) secured a second consecutive term in Assam, winning 102 seats in the 126-member Assembly. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma led the coalition to a supermajority, while the Congress-led six-party alliance was reduced to 21 seats.
Official results released Tuesday show the Congress party secured 19 seats, with its ally Raijor Dal winning two. The All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) took two seats, while the Trinamool Congress and an independent candidate won one seat each. The election followed a special revision of electoral rolls that resulted in the deletion of 2.43 lakh voters.
The BJP campaign centered on the removal of illegal immigrants and an ongoing infrastructure push across the North-East. The Congress party had attempted to counter this by forming a regional bloc with Akhil Gogoi’s Raijor Dal, the Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP), and Left parties, while distancing itself from Badruddin Ajmal’s AIUDF.
With the election process concluded, the NEDA coalition is expected to meet shortly to formalize the government formation. Chief Minister Sarma is scheduled to stake his claim to form the new government before the Governor later this week.
