Security Tightened Around Mamata Banerjee's Residence, Nabanna After Slogans Incident
Security has been significantly tightened around West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's residence in Kalighat and the state secretariat 'Nabanna' in Kolkata following an incident in which a group gathered near her home and raised 'Jai Sree Ram' slogans. The Election Commission directed the deployment of central forces after receiving reports of potential law and order disruptions, officials told PTI.
The BJP won 206 seats in the West Bengal assembly elections, securing a two-thirds majority and ending the TMC's 15-year rule. Mamata Banerjee conceded defeat in the Bhabanipur constituency to BJP's Suvendu Adhikari, a symbolic shift after initial trends suggested a TMC lead.
Banerjee rejected the election outcome, calling the BJP's victory 'immoral' and alleging that over 100 seats were 'looted' through collusion between the Election Commission, central forces, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and Home Minister Amit Shah. She vowed to return to power while leaving the vote-counting centre.
The Election Commission has prohibited victory rallies in Kolkata on Monday to maintain order, though such events will be permitted from Tuesday onward. Authorities have warned strict action against any attempts to disturb peace in the state's capital.
