Toddler Survives 20 Hours Alone in Central Indian Forest After Alleged Maternal Homicide and Abandonment
In a harrowing incident in central India, a two-year-old boy walked alone for nearly 20 hours through a forested area teeming with wildlife after his father allegedly murdered his mother and left him unattended. The child, found unclothed from the waist down and severely dehydrated, was discovered early Sunday near a stream in the Begumganj area of Raisen district, approximately two kilometers from where he was abandoned. Police described his survival as extraordinary, given the challenging terrain, nocturnal animal activity, and the boy's age and physical vulnerability.
The ordeal began on Saturday noon when the 25-year-old father, from Haidergarh village in Vidisha district, reportedly attacked his wife with a stone, resulting in her death. The toddler was present during the incident. The man then fled on a motorcycle, taking the child into neighboring Raisen district before leaving him near a temple in dense forest. He abandoned both the child and the motorcycle, which later helped police trace his movements. Initial investigation was hampered as the suspect concealed the child's whereabouts, delaying search efforts by critical hours.
After the woman's body was located and the suspect detained, investigators expanded their inquiry and contacted family members, learning for the first time about the missing child. A multi-team search was launched at night, with officers combing through thick vegetation, isolated farms, and water bodies using torchlight and local knowledge. Around 8:30 a.m. on Sunday, officers heard faint sounds and found the toddler walking unassisted. He immediately accepted food and water, indicating severe hunger and dehydration. He was transported to a nearby medical facility, where he was stabilized.
Authorities have termed the boy's survival miraculous, given the region's known presence of wild animals such as leopards and snakes, coupled with uneven ground and poor visibility after dark. The child is currently under medical observation and will likely be placed in state care under the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act. Meanwhile, the father remains in police custody facing charges of murder and child abandonment. The case is expected to prompt discussions on rural law enforcement responsiveness, mental health screening, and the protection of minors in domestic violence cases, particularly in remote regions where emergency infrastructure remains limited.
