Congress CM Face Gaurav Gogoi Loses Jorhat Seat to BJP by 22,000 Votes

Congress's chief ministerial face in Assam, Gaurav Gogoi, lost the Jorhat Assembly seat to BJP candidate Hitendranath Goswami by nearly 22,000 votes, a result that underscores a major electoral setback for the party in a closely watched contest. Gogoi, a three-time Lok Sabha MP and son of former Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, had staked his claim on state leadership through this election.
The Congress failed to win any of the Assembly segments within Gogoi's former Lok Sabha constituency except Sivasagar, where ally Raijor Dal's Akhil Gogoi triumphed. Analysts cite Gogoi's perceived inaccessibility and low campaign visibility as key factors, alongside the BJP's effective narrative framing the election as a choice between development and opposition obstruction.
The BJP capitalized on visible infrastructure and development projects in Jorhat over the past five years, particularly in the newly included Holongapar Panchayat, which saw improved connectivity and public services. The party conducted an intensive door-to-door campaign, supported by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma's frequent rallies and sustained outreach by Union Minister Pabitra Margherita, also from the Ahom community.
Goswami, a low-profile candidate, ran an issue-based campaign, positioning himself as a dedicated local leader while acknowledging Gogoi's national stature. His strategy, combined with the absence of a section of youth voters during polling, contributed to shifting voter sentiment in BJP's favour.
The Congress has begun internal reviews of its Assam strategy, with party leaders expected to assess campaign shortcomings and leadership outreach. The Jorhat result will be closely scrutinized as the party prepares for upcoming state elections in the northeast.
