Tamil Nadu: Vijay Set to Form Government May 7 as TVK Secures Backing

CHENNAI — Actor-turned-politician Vijay is set to form a government in Tamil Nadu as early as May 7 after his party TVK, Congress and expected allies moved to bridge a majority shortfall, sources said. TVK emerged as the single-largest party with 108 seats in the 234-member assembly, falling short of the 118 majority mark.
Congress, which won five seats, has committed to back TVK, raising the combined tally to 113. TVK insiders told NDTV they are counting on support from the CPI, CPM and VCK, which hold two seats each, to secure a working majority.
The DMK won 59 seats and Chief Minister M.K. Stalin lost his Kolathur constituency to TVK. The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam won 47 seats as the election broke the long-standing DMK-AIADMK duopoly.
The swearing-in is scheduled for May 7 pending final coordination among allies. The governor is expected to invite TVK to form the government once majority support is confirmed.
