Karnataka Speaker to Review Legal Basis Before Swearing In Sringeri MLA
Karnataka Assembly Speaker U.T. Khader said on May 6, 2026, he must review legal, technical, and legislative procedures before administering the oath to D.N. Jeevaraj, elected from the Sringeri constituency, due to unusual circumstances surrounding the election, including discrepancies in postal ballot counting. Khader denied allegations of intentional delay, stating the process requires careful examination under constitutional protocol.
Jeevaraj filed an application on May 5 seeking the oath, a day after the Election Commission declared him winner. Khader said no one approached him on May 4 and criticized Leader of the Opposition R. Ashoka and Jeevaraj for approaching Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot on May 5, claiming their actions created public mistrust in the Speaker's office. He said he had already communicated his position to the Governor.
The Speaker demanded the Election Commission take action against officials responsible for errors in postal ballot counting, calling the incident a 'faux pas' that requires accountability to prevent recurrence. He emphasized the integrity of democratic processes and the need for institutional trust.
The issue will be discussed at the first meeting of a five-member committee of state Assembly Speakers, formed by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and led by Uttar Pradesh's Satish Mahana, scheduled for May 12–13 in Mysuru. The committee aims to standardize procedures across state legislatures.
