Sunetra Pawar Wins Baramati By-Election with Record 2.18 Lakh Vote Margin
Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar of the Mahayuti alliance has won the Baramati Assembly by-election in Maharashtra by a record margin of 218,930 votes, the highest victory margin ever recorded in an Indian state assembly election. The result, declared after the 24th round of counting, marks a historic milestone in the country's electoral history.
Sunetra Pawar has surpassed the previous national record of 214,835 votes set by Sahibabad MLA Sunil Kumar Sharma in the 2022 Uttar Pradesh elections. She also eclipsed the Baramati constituency's earlier record of 165,265 votes, held by her late husband and former Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar from the 2019 elections.
The by-election saw a voter turnout of 58.17%. The contest was effectively unopposed after Congress candidate Akash More withdrew his nomination, leaving Sunetra Pawar to face 22 other candidates, mostly independents or from minor parties. Collectively, her opponents secured only 4,837 votes.
Among her rivals were independent candidates Karuna Munde, wife of former minister Dhananjay Munde, and Abhijeet Bichukle, a former contestant on Bigg Boss Marathi, neither of whom gained significant traction. The lack of a major party-backed opponent contributed to the lopsided result.
The Maharashtra Election Commission has officially declared Sunetra Pawar the winner, and she is expected to resume her duties as Deputy Chief Minister. The next legislative session is scheduled to convene in January 2025, where she will take her seat in the Assembly.
