India and Suriname Mark 50 Years of Ties as Jaishankar Commences Official Visit

PARAMARIBO — External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar characterized the relationship between India and Suriname as a "family bond" rather than a distant partnership as the two nations mark the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties. In a statement published ahead of his arrival on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, Jaishankar noted that the bilateral engagement has evolved into a robust framework covering infrastructure, trade, and professional training.
The Minister highlighted that the partnership is anchored in high-level exchanges and a shared cultural heritage. Recent diplomatic milestones include the 2023 visit of former Surinamese President Chandrikapersad Santokhi to India and a reciprocal visit by Indian President Droupadi Murmu to Paramaribo later that same year.
Bilateral cooperation currently spans multiple sectors, with India providing technical assistance and credit lines for Surinamese infrastructure projects. The two countries have also expanded their engagement through the Indian diaspora community, which serves as a primary link in the relationship.
Jaishankar is scheduled to hold high-level talks with Surinamese officials during his visit to review ongoing projects and identify new areas for economic and technical collaboration. Official meetings are expected to conclude later this week.
