TVK Opens Alliance Talks to Secure Tamil Nadu Majority After Election Win

Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) is currently engaged in backchannel negotiations to secure a majority in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly after winning 108 seats in the 2026 general elections. With the majority mark set at 118, the party requires 11 additional seats to form a government, accounting for Vijay’s planned resignation from the Trichy East constituency.
TVK functionaries met AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami at his Chennai residence on Tuesday morning to discuss potential cooperation. While official sources indicated the meeting might be limited to a swearing-in invitation, an alliance with the AIADMK’s 47 legislators would provide the TVK with a decisive majority. The development follows the TVK’s success in displacing the long-standing dominance of the DMK and AIADMK.
The Congress party has offered its five seats to the TVK contingent under specific conditions, while talks are also reportedly underway with the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) and the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK). A coalition involving the Congress, PMK, and VCK would allow Vijay to reach the 118-seat threshold without relying on the AIADMK.
Left front parties, including the CPI and CPI(M), have requested until May 8 to deliberate on their support for the TVK-led administration. Vijay is expected to be sworn in as Chief Minister by May 7, pending the formalization of these legislative alliances.
