CPI(M) Deliberates New Leadership in Kerala After Electoral Setback

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM — The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has commenced internal deliberations to select a Leader of the Opposition for the Kerala Assembly following the Left Democratic Front’s (LDF) reduction to 35 seats. The party, which saw 13 of its ministers defeated in the recent polls, is now forced to recalibrate its strategy in its last remaining national stronghold.
Former Public Works and Tourism Minister P.A. Mohammed Riyas, Finance Minister K.N. Balagopal, and Saji Cherian have emerged as the primary contenders for the post. Riyas, 49, is being positioned as a younger face for the party, though his candidacy faces internal resistance due to his status as the son-in-law of outgoing Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. Balagopal, a Central Committee member, is viewed as a stable alternative, while Cherian is recognized for his organizational strength in the Assembly.
The leadership transition is occurring against a backdrop of significant internal friction and the rise of rebel candidates. In traditional Marxist bastions like Payyannur and Taliparamba, official CPI(M) candidates were defeated by party dissidents and expelled leaders. These losses, coupled with the narrow margins of senior leaders including Vijayan, have intensified calls within the party to address allegations of over-centralization and the weakening of local committees.
The CPI(M) state committee is expected to finalize the leadership appointment and initiate a formal review of the electoral losses in the coming week. The party's central leadership will monitor the decision as it seeks to prevent a further decline in its organizational structure across the state.
