Louisiana Grandmother Convicted of Manslaughter in Fatal Whiskey Punishment of 4-Year-Old

A Louisiana jury convicted 57-year-old Roxanne Record of manslaughter Thursday for forcing her four-year-old granddaughter to drink a 750ml bottle of whiskey as punishment, causing the child’s death from acute alcohol poisoning in Baton Rouge on April 21, 2022. First responders pronounced the girl dead at the scene after she was found unresponsive on Wallis Street just before 11:00 a.m.
East Baton Rouge Parish Coroner’s Office autopsy results showed the child’s blood alcohol content was 0.680, more than eight times the legal driving limit for an adult. Prosecutors said Record forced the child to her knees and made her finish the bottle after accusing her of taking a sip from the kitchen counter, while the girl’s mother, 29-year-old Kadjah Record, watched and did nothing.
Roxanne Record and Kadjah Record were arrested April 22, 2022, and initially charged with first-degree murder. Roxanne Record told investigators she “messed up” and “wanted to take full responsibility,” according to the arrest warrant. Kadjah Record gave inconsistent statements and admitted seeing her mother leave the kitchen with the bottle and return with it empty.
Roxanne Record faces up to 40 years in prison at sentencing scheduled for August 10. Kadjah Record is scheduled to return to court next month on charges related to the child’s death.
