TVK Seeks CPI Backing to Form Tamil Nadu Government After Poll Finish
CHENNAI — Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam president C. Joseph Vijay has written to the Communist Party of India seeking its support to form a government in Tamil Nadu after the party emerged as the Assembly’s single largest bloc with 108 seats, short of a majority in the 234-member House. CPI State secretary M. Veerapandian confirmed receipt of the letter late Tuesday.
Vijay’s request positions TVK to attempt government formation within the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance framework, with CPI as a constituent party. TVK secured 108 seats in the just-concluded Tamil Nadu Assembly election, leaving it 10 seats short of a simple majority.
CPI has called an executive committee meeting for May 8 to deliberate on the request and, if required, a State committee meeting the following day to finalize its position. Veerapandian said the party will take a formal decision after the two meetings.
The CPI executive committee will convene on Thursday, with a possible State committee meeting on Friday, to determine whether to back TVK’s bid to establish the government. The outcome will shape alliance arithmetic in Tamil Nadu and the path to government formation.
