BJP Poised for Historic Win in West Bengal as Suvendu Adhikari Edges Ahead of Mamata Banerjee

With early trends in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections showing a decisive shift, the Bharatiya Janata Party is on course to secure a majority, leading in 152 of the 234 seats as of 9:22 a.m. The most significant development is Suvendu Adhikari's lead over Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in the Bhabanipur constituency, a seat she adopted after losing Nandigram to Adhikari in 2021. That earlier defeat forced Banerjee to win a by-election from Bhabanipur to retain her chief ministership, making the current contest a direct political reckoning between the former allies turned rivals.
Adhikari, who defected from the Trinamool Congress to the BJP ahead of the 2021 polls, is also leading in Nandigram, underscoring his dual electoral challenge to Banerjee's dominance. Bhabanipur, located in central Kolkata, has been a TMC stronghold since 2011, when Subrata Bakshi first won it for the party. Banerjee succeeded him in a by-election that year, again to maintain her legislative membership. The seat's symbolic value, combined with the personal rivalry, has elevated this election to a referendum on both leadership and party strength.
The broader electoral landscape reflects a collapse in TMC's dominance. After securing 215 seats in 2021, the party is now leading in only 105, while the BJP has capitalized on anti-incumbency, organizational restructuring, and a polarized campaign environment. The Congress, once a major force in the state, is ahead in just five seats, highlighting its continued marginalization in Bengal politics. The election was conducted in two phases on April 23 and 29, amid intense campaigning and mutual allegations of voter suppression and violence, though no official findings have substantiated these claims.
A BJP victory in West Bengal would mark a historic expansion of its political footprint in eastern India, a region where it has struggled to gain traction. Beyond the immediate change in state government, the outcome could trigger leadership reviews within the TMC, legal challenges to the results, and a recalibration of national opposition strategies. For the BJP, governing a state with strong regional identity and entrenched bureaucracy presents significant administrative challenges. The results also signal a deeper shift in voter alignment, potentially influencing future elections in neighboring states like Odisha and Jharkhand.
