Kozhikode District Under High Security Ahead of Election Counting
The Kozhikode district in India is bracing for the counting of election results, scheduled to take place on May 4, 2026. Given the district's history of politically motivated clashes, the authorities have taken extensive security measures to maintain peace.
The counting process will be conducted at three centres: JDT Group of Institutions, Vellimadukunnu; Government College, Madappally; and St. Mary’s Higher Secondary School, Koodathayi. Each of these locations will be under tight police protection to prevent any disruptions.
In anticipation of potential unrest, District Collector and District Election Officer Snehil Kumar Singh has invoked powers under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) to impose restrictions. These restrictions, which include a prohibition on the assembly of four or more persons within a 200-metre radius of the counting centres, are designed to minimize the risk of clashes.
The restrictions will be in effect from 6 p.m. on May 3, 2026, until 9 a.m. on May 5, 2026, with exemptions for officials involved in the counting and post-counting processes. This proactive approach by the administration underscores the commitment to ensuring a peaceful electoral process.
Looking ahead, the successful completion of the counting process and the announcement of results will be critical in maintaining stability in the region. The administration's ability to prevent post-poll violence will be a significant factor in determining the outcome's acceptance by the various political stakeholders. As the situation unfolds, continuous vigilance and strategic deployment of security forces will be essential in preventing any untoward incidents and ensuring a smooth transition of power.
